James O’Donnell, of Rapid Kayaking, Carrickfinn, is the current British Masters Champion in surf kayaking. His son Connor and his friend Kieran McDyre are competing in the World Championships in Queensland, Brisbane, Australia this year, 2013!
These two Donegal boys, are representing Ireland competing against the very best in the world in surf kayaking. Having walked away with second in the junior European championships, they have every chance of bringing the title back to Donegal! James is currently mentoring the boys and running the business; he also helps run Gweebarra Canoe Club and is the league manager for Northern Ireland surf kayaking and somehow finds time to clean out rivers!
Rapid kayaking is open all year. They take groups of 8 on amazing half-day trips to Owey Island, where you can explore the spectacular caves, rocks, tunnels and arches. One can glide through the clear water sitting on top of a kayak, and smell the freshest salty air out on the Atlantic Ocean. Larger groups are also catered for and lots more details and pictures can be found on their website.
So what is James’ idea of the most spectacular place for kayaking? He says “Loughros Beg to Glencolumbkille with An Phort in the middle of Towey, 16 miles of rugged cliff bound coastline, studded with endless caves and also the spectacular beaches of Tramore”.facebook page.Clannad and AltanRapid Kayaking DonegalKayak
